So, what is Fish Insider … and why is it important?
Great question! So glad you asked!
Fish Insider is new, but you already knew that.
Fish Insider is a website (you’re looking at it now), a print magazine (if you’ve subscribed, you’ll see it soon), an e-newsletter called “Fish Insider News” or “FIN” (you can subscribe here), a production company (audio, video, social media, and lots more), and a consulting service like the industry desperately needs.
In other words, Fish Insider is a lot of things, some of which you’ve seen before and some that are completely new and different.
So … why Fish Insider?
I’m biased, but I think that’s an even bigger question. We formed Fish Insider because we believe that Fishing Matters. We believe it matters as a hobby and as a sport. We believe it matters as a culture and as a lifestyle. We believe it brings people together in nature and makes their lives better. We believe that in a world where so much seems so desperately out of whack and off the rails, we need to find ways to promote the thing that brings meaning and joy to our lives while it also puts food on our tables.
For us, that thing is fishing.
Fishing Matters, and it matters a great deal.
At Fish Insider, our focus is the business-to-business part of our industry. We’re here to serve retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, rep groups, fishing guides, media, chambers of commerce, angling destinations, and anyone else who earns a living from fishing. We believe that by helping these critical stakeholders, we can improve the industry, grow the sport, and make the world a better place.
Lofty goals? Yes, but if we don’t aim high, we have no chance of reaching our target — a better, stronger, more profitable fishing industry that spreads the gospel of fishing farther and wider than ever before.
How do we get there? The only way we can accomplish our goals is by helping you do better business.
To that end, we’ve established an amazing team — the most impressive and accomplished group of people I’ve ever worked with … and I’ve been at this for 40 years.
If you don’t know me, I’ve been in the media end of the fishing world since the early 1980s, when I sold my first article to a national publication. Since that time, I’ve written thousands more articles and a couple of books on fishing, hosted radio, television, and podcast programs on fishing, advised dozens of companies regarding their business, and watched way too many good people struggle and fail because they lacked the understanding and tools to succeed in our industry.
The people at Fish Insider not only love fishing; they also love the business of fishing.
Most of us who work in the fishing industry got here not because we thought it would make us rich, but because we thought it would make us happy. We love fishing and we wanted to be a part of it in any way possible.
Unfortunately, the love of fishing and a business idea — even a great business idea — isn’t enough to succeed. The roadblocks to profitability and success are many, but maps showing the road to prosperity are hard to find.
Fish Insider is here to provide that map for you and to shine a bright light on the road to making your business better, whether you’re a dealer or a distributor, a manufacturer or a jobber, an industry giant or a kitchen table startup.
One size does not fit all when it comes to business solutions, but that’s all some can offer. When all they have is a choice of ad sizes, you know they don’t have real answers. It’s like having only one tool in your toolbox. If all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail.
At Fish Insider, our team is made up of talented professionals with diverse skill sets. Whether you need help with design, manufacturing (domestic or foreign), distribution, pricing, marketing, branding, display, inventory, advertising, media relations, product reviews and competitions, trade and consumer shows, interpersonal connections, or any other aspect of the fishing industry that impacts your bottom line, Fish Insider has pros who can help, and they work on terms you can afford.
Why is Fish Insider coming together to do all these things? Of course, part of the reason is because we want to build a strong business of our own, but at our core it’s because we know that Fishing Matters.
If Fishing Matters to you, and you’re a professional working in the sportfishing industry, I hope you’ll subscribe to our print magazine and to our e-newsletter. I promise they’ll provide support and illumination.
And if this column seems long, it’s only because of just how much Fishing Matters.
